SUMMARY:Summer School “Approaches to Research on Teaching and Learning in
  Higher Education” (HoBid 2023)
DESCRIPTION:Teaching and learning at universities are addressed by many dis
ciplines that are diverse in terms of content and methodology. Current res
earch in higher education can be described as a multidisciplinary\, but
hardly as an interdisciplinary field of research. Doctoral students in thi
s field often feel that they do not really belong to any of the discipline
s concerned with teaching and learning in higher education. The aim of the
HoBid Summer School is to offer young academics in higher education resea
rch a platform for working on their projects\, for further education and f
or networking.\n\nThe first summer school took place at the University of
Paderborn in 2019 with the topic "Quality"\, and the second summer school
at Hamburg University with the topic “Diversity”. The third summer sch
ool invites young academics to discuss and advance their research in the l
ight of “Science Communication”\, that is the negotiation and discussi
on of scientific research with the public. Renowned senior researchers are
going to give keynotes and workshops and facilitate discussions.\n\nScien
ce can no longer simply be done\; in view of the tasks and challenges of t
he globalized world and the diverse societies in the 21st century\, it is
essential to talk about and negotiate it with people (those affected and s
takeholders) outside the scientific system. On the one hand\, this require
s specific competencies\, such as the use of social media or the knowledge
of certain language genres. But it also requires the willingness to refle
ct on and negotiate one's own science and thus one's own perspective with
other people. Both aspects - competencies and willingness - are the topic
of the Summer School.\n\nThe program is designed to allow for a balance be
tween concentrated work on the own project\, learning from others\, and bu
ilding networks. The elements are daily meetups\, daily writing labs\, ple
nary sessions with keynotes by renowned senior researchers (Tobias Jenert\
 , Dorothe Kienhues\, Ingrid Scharlau\, Theresa Velden)\, methods workshops
\, and the wrap-up Friday that organizes the HoBid network. The central to
pic\, science communication\, has room in all of the formats: The keynotes
will illuminate the topic from different perspectives\, the method worksh
ops will introduce methods to analyze and deal with science communication
in research\, for example with a workshop on the reflection of disciplinar
y cultures and hands-on workshops on podcasting\, and in the daily meetups
the junior researchers get to reflect communication issues in their disse
rtation projects. Applications by diverse participants in terms of discipl
inary background\, nationality\, higher education system and other aspects
are strongly encouraged.\n\n&nbsp\;\n\nApplication for HoBid 3 will open
up by the end of December.\n\nFind out more about Hobid 2 and 3 here:\n\nh

nter for University Teaching and Learning)\, Prof. Dr. Tobias Jenert (Pade
rborn University\, Faculty of Business Administration and Economics)\, and
Prof. Dr. Ingrid Scharlau (Paderborn University\, Psychology\, Faculty of
Arts and Humanities) and takes place at Paderborn University in Germany f
rom September 11th to 15th 2023.\n\nThe Summer School is funded by the Vol
kswagenStiftung. Housing and travel costs are covered by the Summer School
