Summer School “Approaches to Research on Teaching and Learning in Higher Education” (HoBid 2023)

11. September 2023 – 15. September 2023 – Universität Paderborn

Focus topic: Science communication

Teaching and learning at universities are addressed by many disciplines that are diverse in terms of content and methodology. Current research in higher education can be described as a multidisciplinary, but hardly as an interdisciplinary field of research. Doctoral students in this field often feel that they do not really belong to any of the disciplines concerned with teaching and learning in higher education. The aim of the HoBid Summer School is to offer young academics in higher education research a platform for working on their projects, for further education and for networking.

The first summer school took place at the University of Paderborn in 2019 with the topic “Quality”, and the second summer school at Hamburg University with the topic “Diversity”. The third summer school invites young academics to discuss and advance their research in the light of “Science Communication”, that is the negotiation and discussion of scientific research with the public. Renowned senior researchers are going to give keynotes and workshops and facilitate discussions.

Science can no longer simply be done; in view of the tasks and challenges of the globalized world and the diverse societies in the 21st century, it is essential to talk about and negotiate it with people (those affected and stakeholders) outside the scientific system. On the one hand, this requires specific competencies, such as the use of social media or the knowledge of certain language genres. But it also requires the willingness to reflect on and negotiate one’s own science and thus one’s own perspective with other people. Both aspects – competencies and willingness – are the topic of the Summer School.

The program is designed to allow for a balance between concentrated work on the own project, learning from others, and building networks. The elements are daily meetups, daily writing labs, plenary sessions with keynotes by renowned senior researchers (Tobias Jenert, Dorothe Kienhues, Ingrid Scharlau, Theresa Velden), methods workshops, and the wrap-up Friday that organizes the HoBid network. The central topic, science communication, has room in all of the formats: The keynotes will illuminate the topic from different perspectives, the method workshops will introduce methods to analyze and deal with science communication in research, for example with a workshop on the reflection of disciplinary cultures and hands-on workshops on podcasting, and in the daily meetups the junior researchers get to reflect communication issues in their dissertation projects. Applications by diverse participants in terms of disciplinary background, nationality, higher education system and other aspects are strongly encouraged.

Application for HoBid 3 will open up by the end of December.
